2010 OHIO UNIVERSITY BOBCAT TOUR! ![]() ![]() ![]() On this tour we explore some of Vermont's earliest settlements. Dorset is where in 1776 the Green Mountain Boys congregated to issue their defiance to the "Brits and the Yorkers" and where they likely enjoyed the early hospitality of the Dorset Inn ("Vermont's oldest hostelry"). Soon thereafter, Arlington became the center of revolutionary activity as well as Vermont's de facto seat of government. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our tour stays at two of Vermont’s finest inns. The first two nights we are guests at the historic Dorset Inn (Vermont’s oldest inn), where we can enjoy a rocking chair view of this beautifully preserved village, take a swim at the nearby spring-fed marble quarry, or maybe just enjoy a quiet evening stroll past the elegant colonial-era homes that make this one of Vermont's most picturesque villages. Then, on the following two nights, we stay at Amie Emmons’ exquisite West Mountain Inn, renowned for its beautiful setting above the Battenkill River, as well as for their superb food, and lovely rooms. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our biking is peaceful and includes riding along lovely streams and rivers, and through peaceful farming country and small villages. We stop for lunch at general stores, cycle through the spectacular Mettawee Valley, and explore the shores of lovely Lake St. Catherine where we can swim, picnic, or wander along the beach. We ride through South Dorset and into the stately town of Manchester where we pass handsome mansions fronted by miles of marble sidewalks and white picket fences. We visit Hildene, the magnificent former estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, and then ride south along the Battenkill, through the Chiselville Covered Bridge, and into Arlington, Norman Rockwell's home and inspiration for over 14 years. |
